Sanyo Eneloop 8 Pack AA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries

LSD is great.... just keep away from heat!5

According to Sanyo the new eneloop LSD (low self-discharge) NiMH batteries can maintain 85% of its original charge after 1 year of storage. This claim is slightly misleading because it is based on simulation test at 20 degree C. At higher temperature the self-discharge rate is likely to be much higher.

I have tested five of those AA cells (details are given in my review for the eneloop 4-pack). The average energy loss is about 26% after less than 6 months of storage based on manufacturer date codes. This self-discharge rate is about 3 times higher than what Sanyo claimed. However it is still 6 times lower than that of ordinary NiMH batteries. Therefore I'm in the process of replacing most of my existing rechargeable cells to the Sanyo eneloop.

Thanks to lower self-discharge rate you'll discover a lot more applications for eneloop cells in your house such as in clocks and remote controls. Do NOT use those cell in smoke detectors since their discharge voltage profile is very different from that of alkaline cells. Also don't use them as emergency flash lights batteries in your car because the higher temperature during summer time will probably nullify the advantage of LSD.

[Update on Jan 13 2007]

I have tested six new eneloop AAA cells dated "2006-06'. The average residue charge is 589mAh and the freshly charged capacity is 827mAh. This implies a self-discharge rate of 29% in 7 months which is consistent with the rate for AA cells (26% loss in 6 months).

[Update on Jan 29 2007]

The Rayovac "Hybrid" rechargeable NiMH batteries are now available at Walmart priced at only $[...] for 4-pack of AA or AAA cells. It is also advertised to have low self-discharge rate but not as low as that for eneloop. The eneloop is supposed to retain 85% charge in 12 months (when stored at 20 degree C) whereas Hybrid is supposed to retain 80% charge in 6 months (no mention of temperature).

[Update on June 3 2007]

In my 2-month self-discharge test using four different brands of NiMH cells. Hybrid and eneloop came up neck-and-neck!

Room temperature: 60-62 degree F (16-17 degree C). All capacities measured are average of 2-cells.

- Sanyo eneloop 2000 purchased Jan 2007.

Initial capacity measured: 2070mAh

Capacity after 62 days: 1796mAh (-13.2%)

(Note: my previous result for eneloop showed -18% but I repeated the test and it did better this time)

- Rayovac Hybrid 2100 purchased Jan 2007.

Initial capacity measured: 2155mAh

Capacity after 62 days: 1859mAh (-13.8%)

- LaCrosse 2000 purchased Jan 2006.

Initial capacity measured: 1902mAh

Capacity after 62 days: 1417mAh (-26%)

- SONY 2300 purchased Sep 2004.

Initial capacity measured: 2210mAh

Capacity after 62 days: 1309mAh (-41%)

So neither eneloop nor Hybrid did as well as advertised but they are still significantly better than previous generation of NiMH cells. So you can't go wrong with either brand.

Duracell Procell AA Batteries 24-Count

Cost effective alternative4

These batteries are a very good choice for an inexpensive alkaline. Heavy duty batteries are not cost effective because although cheaper they have a very short run time. To get the best bang for your buck go for alkalines like these.

The "Procell" designation is basically Duracell's way of marking these batteries as ones intended for industrial applications. They make them as a separate line so they won't directly compete with their consumer lines.

My experience is that these batteries do not last quite as long as the top consumer lines from Duracell and Energizer. However they are within 10-20% (depending on the application) and are considerably cheaper. So they are much more cost effective.

Unless you are using them in an application where it is difficult to change the batteries I recommend going with these instead of spending more.More detail ...

20 of AG13/357A Alkaline Button Cell Watch Battery

Everything is True - Great Deal5

Yet another satisfied customer. Everything you've read by satisfied Amazon reviewers is true. These 20 batteries only cost $3.09 with free shipping (took two days to Maryland). Our local CVS drugstore was charging $5.95+tax for one Duracell battery. I randomly checked 3 of the 20 batteries with a voltmeter and found readings of 1.57 - 1.58 V (rating on packaging is 1.55 V). The rear of the packaging suggests a 2-year expiration date but the manufacture date is nowhere to be found.

Duracell DC2400B4N Rechargeable Batteries NiMH AAA Size 4-Count Packages (Pack of 2)

Don't confuse those with Duracell 'Pre Charged' batteries3

I can't believe it! Just when we thought we've got the Duracell battery color scheme figured out those folks at Duracell pulled another cheap trick out of their collective... hat!

To recall here is the color scheme for Duracell AA/AAA batteries:

- Duracell alkaline cell has the famous 'copper top' and a black bottom

- Traditional Duracell Rechargeable NiMH (DC2400) cell is green and black in color

- Newer Duracell Pre Charged NiMH cell has a 'copper top' and a green/black bottom

The latest batch of rechargeable AA/AAA NiMH cells from Duracell all have the 'copper top' and green/black bottom similar to that for 'Pre Charged' version. However those cells don't say 'Pre Charged' on them. Instead they have their capacity printed (2650mAh for Duracell DC1500 AA 1000mAh for Duracell DC2400B4N AAA). It is important to know that: those are NOT the low-self-discharge type like Sanyo Eneloop. They are traditional NiMH cells which have higher capacity but suffer from rapid self-discharge problem. So even though their prices may look attractive those are no bargains.

Remember: "If it doesn't say 'Pre Charged' put it back!"

SE CR2032 Battery Package of 5 (5 Packs 25 Batteries)

You get what you pay for.1

Bought these for my Omron Pedometer (which uses CR2032 batteries). I was enticed by the price (and the surprising high user rating) but in retrospect I should have stuck with a name brand. The battery that comes with the Omron and the Energizer battery I replaced it with each lasted 5-6 months. The BEST of these generic batteries lasted only 1 month and the worst of the bunch lasted mere days. Very inconsistent from one battery to the next. You get what you pay for and the price is not worth the hassle IMO. I would recommend Energizer. (I imagine Duracell if they sell these kind would also probably be good.)More detail ...

Duracell Coppertop AAA 20 Count Pack

Long Lasting Power - Highly Recommended5

Duracell is our favorite brand of batteries for our high drain electronics. These AAAs generally last a full day or two longer than Maxell 723815 LR03 AAA Cell 36 Pack Box Battery (which are a good value) in our MP3 speakers but you are going to pay about 18 cents more apiece (50 cents vs 32 cents).

These are good to use when traveling since they will likely last much longer than generics and are less likely to need replacing at a critical moment.

Highly Recommended!

Did You Fly??5

This is a great deal folks if you happen to be in a store and see these at a lower price that's great BUT if you drove ANYWHERE to get them you just lost money. These are delivered to your door and if you have Amazon Prime (as I do for years) 2 day shipping is free. You need to think the whole thing through before you give a deal like this 1 star. I love having to go no farther than my front door to get them. Just for the record nobody is questioning the quality of the product which is 4/5 stars easy. IMPORTANT NOTE: It seems that from time to time Amazon changes the seller for these and not all are on Amazon Prime so look closely if that is important to you. One week it is and the next week it is not. Still a great product.More detail ...

Duracell Value Charger With 4AA Pre Charged Rechargeable Nimh Batteries CEF14DX4N

Good Batteries Bad Charger3

This package (CEF14DX4N) includes four new Duracell 'Pre Charged' NiMH AA cells plus a simple charger. The batteries are similar to the Sanyo eneloop low-self-discharge cells. In fact based on their identical technical specifications and physical shapes of (+) and (-) terminals I am convinced that the Duracell Pre Charged AA is actually SANYO eneloop AA underneath a different wrapper. Therefore all the good things you heard about eneloop apply to Duracell 'Pre Charged' too.

The 'value charger' (CEF14) included here however is not a good value because:

1. It is a timer-based dumb charger meaning that it doesn't detect when cells are full charged. It simply charges at 360mA for 6 hours and turns off. You have to wait until your cells are fully exhausted before recharging otherwise they will be over-charged. With a 'smart' charger you may choose to top-off your rechargeable cells any time.

2. It can only charge either 2 or 4 AA cells in pairs. This is very inconvenient if you have appliances that require odd number of cells.

3. It can only charge two AAA cells and you cannot charge any more AA cells at the same time.

My advice is to get the CEF23DX4N package for just a few dollars more. It comes with four Duracell Pre Charged cells (2xAA + 2xAAA) but the included charger (CEF23) is far superior in every aspect. It even operates from your vehicle battery and doubles as an USB charger too.

[Update on Dec 24 2008]

I was only half-right when I boldly proclaimed that "Duracell Pre Charged AA are rebranded Sanyo eneloop cells" in my original review. It turns out that the first batch of Duracell AA cells I bought from Amazon are made in Japan and those are identical to eneloop (both mechanically and electrically). But lately I bought some more Duracell AA from a warehouse club. Those are made in China and they are identical to the Rayovac Hybrid.

[Update on Feb 15 2010]

I have confirmed that the new Duracell 'Value Charger' has several improvements over the old model:

- Works from 100-240V AC (instead of just 120V AC)

- Able to charge 4 AAA at a time (instead of just two)

- Semi-smart charge termination (stops when BOTH cells are fully charged)

The only remaining drawback is thet it charges in pairs only.More detail ...

Duracell Pre Charged Rechargeable NiMH AA Batteries 4-Pack

An eneloop by any other name...4

[Updated Dec 24 2008]

I was only half-right when I boldly proclaimed that "Duracell Pre Charged AA are rebranded Sanyo eneloop cells" in my original review. It turns out that the first batch of Duracell AA cells I bought from Amazon are made in Japan and those are identical to eneloop (both mechanically and electrically). But lately I bought some more Duracell AA from a warehouse club. Those are made in China and they are identical to the Rayovac Hybrid.

[Original review follows]

Judging from similarity of technical specifications and physical shapes of (+) and (-) terminals I am convinced that the Duracell Pre Charged AA is actually SANYO eneloop AA underneath a different wrapper. Therefore all the good things you heard about eneloop apply to Duracell 'Pre Charged' too.

My own testing has shown that the capacity of eneloop AA cell is slightly above the claimed 2000mAh and it is able to retain at least 85% of its charge after 5 months in storage. The Rayovac Hybrid AA starts with slightly higher capacity at 2100mAh but it 'only' retains 80% capacity after 5 months. For all practical applications both are equally good. Just pick whichever brand (Sanyo Rayovac or Duracell) is on-sale and you can't go wrong.

One small problem with the Duracell 'Pre Charged' cell is that: it looked too similar to the well-known 'Copper Top' alkaline cell. So there is a good chance that people may mistaken it for a disposable cell. Personally I prefer the distinctive-looking white case of the eneloop cell.

Seventh Generation Baby Wipes Refills Chlorine Free and Unscented 70-Count Packs (Pack of 12) (840 Wipes) [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]

Great Wipes But Ingredients Keep Changing Wipe Size Decreased Over Time and You Get Fewer Wipes Now4

Note added 11/28/09: I've revised my 04/26/09 review with new information and changed my rating from five to four stars.

I ordered these wipes from Amazon in mid-2008 in early 2009 and in late 2009 but the wipes were different each time. See Customer Images.

In mid-2008 the front of the mostly-green package was beige and had "seventh GENERATION baby" on the "leaf" logo. The text on the front was in English only; the back was stamped "MADE IN UK." The ingredients were "Water Cetyl Hydroxyethylcellulose (plant-derived cleaning agent) Glycerin (vegetable oil derived) Citric Acid (provides stability and pH balance) Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract Tocopheryl Acetate (vitamin E acetate) Potassium Sorbate and Sodium Benzoate (food-grade preservatives)." The weight of the package was 1 pound (although it's possible that some moisture leaked out as the measurement was taken in early 2009). There were 80 wipes per package each 6.8"x7.5".

In early 2009 the front of the mostly-green package was blue and gray and had just "seventh GENERATION" on the "leaf" logo on the front. The text on the front was in English and French; the back was stamped "MADE IN USA." The ingredients were "Water Polysorbate 20 (cleansing agent derived from sugar) Glycerin (soothes and cleanses skin vegetable oil derived) Citric acid (provides stability & pH balance) Potassium sorbate (a natural preservative) Aloe Barbadensis Gel (helps heal skin) Tocopherol acetate (Vitamin E acetate helps heal skin)." These ingredients were rated 2 (a "low" hazard) on a cosmetic safety database on the Web. The weight of the package was 1-1/4 pounds when received. There were 80 wipes per package each 6.8"x7.5".

In late 2009 the packaging had changed completely with an overall light lime color instead of green. The baby on the front was sitting in the grass looking at a stacking ring toy. The text was all in English; the side was stamped "MADE IN USA." The ingredients were "Aqua (water) glycerin (vegetable oil derived) citric acid (provides stability and pH balance) cetyl hydroxyethylcellulose (plant-derived cleaning agent) aloe barbadensis extract (aloe) tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E acetate) sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate (food-grade preservatives). ... The wipe material used in this product is a blend of rayon (naturally derived) and polyester (PET)." The weight of the package was 1 pound when received. There were 70 wipes per package each 6.8"x7".

Common to all three versions: (1) Although all the packages said "unscented" there was actually a slight odor perhaps from the citric acid and aloe. (2) We've used all of them without problems like diaper rash. (3) I don't agree with reviews such as "There is hardly any moisture now" suggesting that the water content has decreased over time. The current wipes feel just as moist as the previous ones. Although the package weight decreased between early 2009 and late 2009 the number of wipes and their size also declined so that the weight per unit area remained about the same. I will say that the weight per unit area (.0048 ounces per square inch) is lower than for other brands of wipes (e.g. Kirkland from CostCo at .0057 ounces per sq in) suggesting a lower water content than other brands have.

However comparing the three versions I do have two major concerns: (1) THE INGREDIENTS KEEP CHANGING. Can't the manufacturer stick with one formula? (2) THE COST PER SQUARE INCH OF WIPE HAS INCREASED ABOUT 22% from 0.086 cents in early 2009 to 0.105 cents in late 2009. The reason is that you pay the same price as before but the wipe size decreased and you get fewer wipes now.

For the reasons above I changed my 4/26/09 rating from five stars to four now. Consider buying these wipes from Amazon.com!More detail ...
